Blasphemy or in Vain?

front-cover-mouth

I had a conversation with an ex-pastor at Huntington Beach pier on the Saturday of the 1st Academy and he said that when we miss use the name of the Lord it's called taking Gods name in vain, not blasphemy. He said that blasphemy was when we claim to be God. I first struggled with this and tried to get him to stick around to speak with Tony but he had his family with him and they walked off before Tony got off the box.

I was reading my bible and I found some scriptures that will help answer his statement that using God's name as a cuss word is not blasphemy.

"Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him, and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, "Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?" And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming." (Luke 22:63-65)

Verse 65 shows us that saying things against God is blasheming.

Then they secretly induced men to say, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God." (Acts 6:11)

In this verse Jesus is falsely accused of speaking blasphemy against Moses. Moses isn't God so that would simply mean that they had accused Jesus of speaking against Moses and God.

"But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming." (Acts 13:45)

Here we see the Jews began contradicting the truth of what Paul was speaking of Gods word and blasphemed. Ofcourse these Jews were not calling themselves God.

"And as I punished them often in all the synagogues, I tried to force them to blaspheme; and being furiously enraged at them, I kept pursuing them even to foreign cities.(Acts 26:11)

Paul tells us in this verse that he tried to get Christians to speak against God. Certainly Paul himself would not be trying to get Christains to profess they were God.

For "THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU," just as it is written. (Romans 2:24)

This verse is self-explanitory.

Also look at Acts 18:6, 1 Timothy 1:13, 1 Timothy 1:20, James 2:7, Revelations 2:9

Any time we use Gods name as a cuss word or flippantly we bring God's name lower than ourself and use it as filth or a joke is blasphemy. Remember Matthew 6:9, "Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name" Everything about God is holy, including His name. God has said, "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain."(Exodus 20:7)

If you've used Gods name as a cuss word and are concerned that God will not leave you unpunished then take the Good Person Test. I hope this helps.
